On Saturday 17th February, Newham, London held its first ever citizen science fair. This was an opportunity for local people to come along and hear from local technology practitioners about the technology impacting their lives. The event was volunteer run and was put on to inspire, share inventions, and to encourage learning and participation in Newham. Although not local to Nottingham, Horizon was invited along having worked previously with the organiser, Hugh Barnard. Pepita and Dominic took down the Memory Machine (MeMa) prototype and a WiSeBox from theWiSeParks project so that they could talk about how these technologies could be used by and how they can impact the lives of people. Pepita also gave an introductory talk on Artificial Intelligence, what it is, how it’s being used, and how it affects all of our lives. It was a great opportunity to talk to a non-academic audience and hear their thoughts on current technology trends, and hopefully to inspire people to be more involved – over 120 people attended! Also present were local MPs, the Mayor and council members who could see the benefits of the technology on show for their constituents.
