Exciting Event on Children’s Digital Safety – Hosted by Hannah Heilbuth and Ellie Colegate!

Today is Safer Internet Day 2025—a global initiative dedicated to promoting a safer and more responsible digital world for everyone, especially children. With this in mind, we’re excited to share an upcoming event that aligns perfectly with this mission.

Hannah Heilbuth (2022 Cohort) and Ellie Colegate (2021 Cohort) are thrilled to share an exciting upcoming event they’re both involved in, addressing a critical issue in the digital world today: children’s safety and privacy online.

The one-day conference, “What’s Right for Children and Their Data? Keeping on the Right Side of the Law”, is a collaborative effort between the Universities of Nottingham and Birmingham and Privacy Laws & Business.

Save the Date: Tuesday, March 11th, 2025

Hosted at the magic circle firm A&O Shearman, this event will bring together key stakeholders to explore how we can create a digital environment that is both safe and beneficial for children.

With contributions from industry giants, regulators, NGOs, lawyers, and academics, discussions will centre on how those who offer websites, apps, and games aimed at children can design them in such a way that the interests of children are placed first. Empowering them to use the internet and connected services in a safe and appropriate way at their various stages of development.

Confirmed speakers include representatives from:

  • TikTok
  • Google
  • The Information Commissioner’s Office
  • 5Rights
  • A&O Shearman lawyers
    …and many more!

Over the last six months, Hannah and Ellie have been working alongside representatives of the University of Birmingham and Privacy Laws & Business, as well as Dr Oliver Butler from the School of Law, to organise this event. Using their respective PhD expertise and insight to contribute to the event direction, securing speakers, and organising their panels covering topics close to their research topics.

On the day of the event, Ellie and Hannah will be moderating and chairing the panels they’ve designed, delving into topics like:

    • How age-assurance technologies are implemented online (Ellie’s panel)
    • Designing platforms and services with children’s privacy and data rights in mind (Hannah’s panel)
