More Conference News: Ellie Colegate to Present at ‘Protections in International Law’!

We’re excited to share that Ellie Colegate (2021 cohort) will be heading back to her former university, Canterbury Christ Church University, this month to present at the Protections in International Law conference! 🎉

Ellie’s paper, Safety versus Speech: The Importance of Rationales for Online Safety Interventions in the Context of Artificial Intelligence Content Moderation Systems, will explore the impact of different rationales, like the protection of free speech and the protection of users, when online safety regulations are introduced and how this influences and shapes the day-to-day operation of automated systems on social media platforms. Her research reflects on the lack of an international consensus on which rationales should be placed in a position of prominence when regulating online platforms and speculates on the future use of automated systems going forward.

She’ll be presenting in the Individuals Under Emerging AI Governance Initiatives stream, contributing to important discussions on how international law protects (or fails to protect) individuals in an increasingly AI-regulated world.

This conference will bring together researchers from various disciplines to examine the current scope and limitations of protections in international law across multiple fields and perspectives.

While there’s no dedicated website, here is a flyer with more details: CCCU Protections in International Law Flyer

Congratulations, Ellie! Your work is helping shape the conversation on AI governance and digital rights—an increasingly vital issue in today’s world. We can’t wait to hear more about your presentation! 🎤✨
