Open Data Round Up: 07/10/13

The biggest news in open data this week, at least from a Horizon perspective, is the announcement by Ordnance Survey of a new series of Open Data Masterclasses, again supported by Horizon. The series of seven Masterclasses will take place at venues around the UK and anyone interested should register as soon as they can as places are limited.

Some other interesting pieces of open data news include:

• The Technology Strategy Board have announced that they are to launch a major call for proposals in the area of Big Data and Data Exploration. A programme of events will take throughout October and November to provide information to prospective bidders ahead of a call launch later this year.
• Nesta have published a video from the first information session for their Open Data Challenge Series as well as some additional information on the series itself
• The Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN) have begun a series of blog posts which look to define open data: the first is on Defining Open Data whilst the second covers Exploring Openness and the Open Definition
• OKFN have also launched a series of open data training programmes: Open Data in One Day, Administrative Open Data Management and Open Data Portal Technology
• The School of Data have announced an online data expedition investigating garment factories and clothing supply chains which will take place between the 18th and 20th October.
• Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino of Goodnight Lamp has written a really interesting piece for Gigaom on Designing Security into the Internet of Things
